Installing
Computer Memory |

The
idea of opening up your computer and tinkering around
is intimidating to most people; however, adding memory
chips to your computer is so simple you can do it yourself!
Each specific type of memory requires slightly different
installation instructions. The memory you purchase should
come with instructions on installation which are easy
to follow. Most companies also have websites which detail
installation instructions.

| Being
Grounded |
When
installing memory on your computer, it is important to
make sure you are properly grounded. This is to ensure
that no static electricity stored in your body or clothing
can damage your installation. Before touching any electronic
components, make sure you are properly grounded. You can
wear an anti-static wrist strap or other type of static
control device which can be purchased from most memory
chips upgrade companies or your local electronics store. |

Installation
Steps |
|
 |
1. Turn off your computer. Before beginning, ensure
that your computer is completely
shut down.
2. Do not unplug your computer. While it may seem
like the sensible thing to
do, unplugging your computer
prevents your computer from staying
grounded. If your computer
is grounded, any static electricity stored
in your body will be discharged
before handling the memory chips.
This can be done by touching any
unpainted metal part of the case.
3. Follow the instructions in your computer model's
owner's manual to remove the
computer's cover.
4. Find the memory expansion sockets on the motherboard.
If all the sockets are currently
full, remove smaller capacity modules to make room
for higher capacity modules.
5. Discharge your static electricity and pick up
the memory chip by its top or
sides. DO NOT touch the gold
or silver contacts on the bottom of
the chip. Even a
little oil from your finger can eventually disrupt the
connection. Memory chips will
only go in the empty slot one
way so line up the notches in
the contacts with the partitions
in the RAM sockets.
6. Insert the module according to your specific
RAM directions.
7. Turn on the computer and follow the instructions
to allow your computer to recognize
the newly installed memory.
